4 foods that are natural insomnia remedies

by Martin Reed on 6 October 2010 in insomnia cures

There are some types of food that insomniacs should avoid. On the flip side, there are also foods that relieve insomnia. We recently came across some more of the latter, and thought we’d share.

According to a recent article published at That’s Fit, the following foods should be included in the diet of an insomniac:

  • Dark chocolate: Cocoa contains tryptophan – a building block of serotonin, which helps you feel sleepy.
  • Whey protein isolate: A powdered supplement (good to add to smoothies and shakes) that also contains tryptophan.
  • Chia: A gluten-free grain that’s abundant in magnesium and calcium, which are considered to be natural sleep boosters.

We’re sure that most of you have latched on to the fact that dark chocolate appears on the list. Just remember – moderation is key. Don’t go trading insomnia for a chocolate addiction (that’s not the J-Lo way).

As always, there's more information and advice in our insomnia support forum.
