An alarming statistic for insomniacs taking sleeping pills

by Martin Reed on 5 October 2010 in insomnia information

The Canadian Journal of Psychiatry recently published a study that found the risk of dying increased by 36% when drugs were used to treat insomnia or anxiety.

Those who took the drugs at least once in the month before the study had a higher chance of dying from any cause.

Two reasons for this depressing conclusion were put forward; firstly, sleeping pills slow down our response times and alertness which can increase our chances of having an accident. Secondly, sleeping pills may exacerbate existing breathing problems.

Some pretty chilling conclusions, we’re sure you’ll agree. Yet another reason why drugs should never be the first solution when looking for an insomnia cure. Alternative therapies can be just as effective.

As always, there's more information and advice in our insomnia support forum.
