We just finished reading an article over at EmpowerHer about insomnia and how it affects women. We’ve covered this issue a few times:
Is insomnia sexist?
For women, insomnia is a side effect of using their brain more than men
The link between menopause and insomnia
The article over at EmpowerHer was pretty typical – until we got to page two. There, we’re given some simple insomnia treatments, courtesy of the University of Maryland Medical Center:
- Visit the doctor
- Take a warm bath
- Enjoy a massage
- Listen to music
- Drink warm milk/herbal tea
- Sleep on a firm mattress
- Count
Basically, all the stuff we’ve heard a thousand times before. Here’s the best part of the article, though – it also recommendeds sleeping with your head facing magnetic north and your feet facing south.
Unfortunately we’re not given a theory as to why this should help – but if you’re at a loss as to how to cure your insomnia, maybe you need to get your compass out.
Who knew all that orienteering you were forced to do as a child would actually prove to be useful in later life?!

I seem to be stuck in houses where the only way to put the bed in the room without other problems is an east/west placement.
When I was still living at home as a teen, I would rearrange my room from head/west feet/east to head/north and feet/south, and never noticed any different in quality of sleep.
