Are you texting your way to insomnia?

A few years ago, I wrote about a possible link between the ever-popular activity of text messaging and sleep problems such as insomnia in children.

We’re still bombarding our children with so much in the way of stimulation, it’s a wonder any of them have healthy sleeping habits.

Now, it would appear that text messaging is affecting the sleep of college students, too.

A study undertaken at Washington and Lee University found that the more text messages sent and received by first-year college students, the poorer their sleep.

It’s thought that this is due to the implied pressure on text message recipients to respond immediately, along with the fact that cellphones are often placed close to the bed so incoming alerts cause nighttime awakenings.

Furthermore, frequent text messaging was also associated with higher levels of interpersonal stress.

The problem described in this article is one that affects many. We are so used to keeping our cellphones glued to our hands, that when they go off in the middle of the night it is almost habit to wake up and respond. This can cause very light sleep, and interrupted sleep is not what your body needs. Sleep is key to health, so leaving your phone outside of your room may be the best option. Try this for a week and if your sleep improves. Uninterrupted, deep, quality sleep is what we should strive for.
