Over the long term, being unable to sleep can cause physical health problems. Now, a significant study has been published raising the possibility that heart disease is linked to disturbances in the body’s 24 hour clock.
By working on mice, the researchers found that high levels of the hormone aldosterone made them vulnerable to high blood pressure. The researchers showed that the body clock directly controls a gene that plays a key role in the production of aldosterone.
This is a very interesting study as it shows just how important sleep is, and just how dangerous long term sleep deprivation can be. This is yet another reason why more research needs to be done, and why there needs to be more awareness and education about insomnia and other sleep disorders. Why does society still not take insomnia seriously?
