Individuals need to take insomnia more seriously

28 December 2009 in insomnia information

We are always saying that society needs to take insomnia more seriously – but maybe we are missing the bigger picture. Maybe it isn’t society that doesn’t take insomnia seriously enough – perhaps it’s the people that suffer from it.

We talk to a lot of insomniacs – many of them haven’t been to a doctor. The reasons are varied – some don’t want to be prescribed drugs, some don’t think they’ll be taken seriously, others don’t think the issue warrants a visit to the doctor.

A survey undertaken in India found that although as many as 87% of Indians knew that lack of sleep affected their health, very few visited a doctor. Unfortunately, the survey doesn’t explain why those suffering with sleep disorders didn’t seek medical advice. We’re sure there are a number of reasons – including cost (and time).

We can’t encourage society to take insomnia more seriously until more sufferers take it seriously and seek medical advice. If you’ve not been to a doctor, please tell us why. Maybe there are a few common reasons or issues that we can all help address.
