We just finished reading an article over at The Province about products that are banned in Canada, yet often found available for sale. What really caught our eye was the relationship between lead and mercury poisoning and insomnia.
Apparently, lead and mercury poisoning can cause insomnia – something we’d not heard of before. Perhaps the contamination of our food supply is a contributor to the increasing prevalence of insomnia. In any case, it’s another avenue worth exploring if you’re trying to find the cause of your insomnia.
As always, there's more information and advice in our insomnia support forum.

Chronic Insomnia (my diagnosis) is the unacknowledged plague of the 21st century. There is a useful article in Scientific American page 61 (picture of 3D brain) & 25 where the switchboard resemblance of the hippocampus is noted. And the amygdala removal results in no emotive outbursts or sex either.
Aging (deceptive name for stress) is a known destructive agent of the brain. How to reduce stress? The adrenals collapse & the only medical treatment of glucocorticoids actually stops the adrenals from functioning at all. And this has its own problem with use. So the way to recover adrenal function? Stop the stress.
Stress has been shown (2010) study to act similar to corticosteroids in amplifying the emotive section of the hippocampus & lowering action for the cognitive section (dorsal & ventral parts of the hippocampus have different receptors.) Recovering ability of adrenals is done in a stressless environment. Hence our medical research with cloning.
Thanks for the information, Kate – and the reference to Scientific American. We have members of our insomnia help community who would argue that their insomnia isn’t down to stress – if only the cause of insomnia was so simple and certain.
I wouldn’t doubt that stress is behind a huge number of insomnia cases, though. What have you done to reduce stress? Has it helped relieve your insomnia?
