Is your post-work routine the cause of your insomnia?

8 July 2010 in insomnia causes

Most of us feel pretty tired when we get home after a day at work – in an ideal world we just collapse onto the couch. In a more realistic world, we either continue working from home or have a drink (or two).

According to The Seattle Times, this kind of post-work routine could be the cause of your insomnia. Instead, you should:

  • Listen to music on the way home
  • Exercise or interact with friends and family
  • Reflect on the positive aspects of your day
  • Avoid alcohol and cigarettes
  • Eat healthily

Although this does sound rather simplistic, we’d not previously considered that our post-work routines could be an insomnia cause. We’d be interested to know what you do to relax after work and whether you feel that routine affects your sleep.

Like I said….I’m pretty sure that it’s the whole not having a job to come home from that’s causing my insomnia! I have been an insomniac for years, but no job just made it worse. I took a look at the suggestions and I had to laugh – not that they’re bad suggestions. It’s that I do the polar opposite of what they say! Er…I smoke (yeah, I know tsk, tsk), I have no positive aspects to reflect on at the moment, and my idea of healthy is asking for no mayo on my cheeseburger. I guess I should face it….I’m screwed. :)

Thanks for your comment, Diana! I think this just goes to further prove that there can be no stock insomnia advice – different things work for different people.

Oh and as for no mayo on the cheeseburger – we all have to start somewhere!
