Make your bed and clean your sheets if you want to cure your insomnia

by Martin Reed on 23 March 2011 in insomnia cures

Back in December 2009, we told you that your chaotic bedroom could be the cause of your insomnia. Now, a survey released by the National Sleep Foundation largely agrees.

The survey found that people sleep much better when their bedrooms are comfortable and clean. Those that made their bed every day or almost every day were 19% more likely to get a good night's sleep. Around 75% of respondents said they got a more comfortable night's sleep when their sheets had a fresh scent.

So there you have it. All you need to do to cure your insomnia is make your bed and keep the sheets clean. You don't even need to run the vacuum cleaner.

When I was a child at home, my bed was made every day, my room had no clutter, and it was picked up/tidied at least once a week. I had insomnia then.

Now the closets are too small for what we have to put in them (we don’t have a place to store out-of-season clothes, and we both have costumes that are bulky), so there is a pile of clothing at the end of the bed on both sides. Husband is finally snoring very little, which helps with my sleeping, and we have a view to the outside that, as we’re on the upper floor, does not result in worry about peeping toms. Had on in 1978, and it was 2002 or so before I could stop needing the drapes all closed in order to sleep at night. What changed was that I needed outside light to tell me what time of day it was, and to keep from feeling imprisoned/claustrophobic.

I’ll pass on that explanation for me–but I think clutter in her usually-tidy room would bother my MiL severely.
