Natural insomnia remedies you can try today

26 March 2010 in insomnia cures

We’ve written a few different posts about natural insomnia cures – particularly when it comes to food and diet. With the help of AOL Health, we thought we’d round up some suggested natural insomnia remedies you can try today.

Hops – Work as a mild sedative.

Jamaican Dogwood – Acts as a muscle relaxant.

L-theanine – An amino acid found in green tea; promotes alertness during the day and a deeper sleep at night.

Lavender – Studies have shown that lavender aromatherapy can aid sleep.

Magnesium/Calcium – Natural sleep boosters.

Melatonin – A hormone that controls sleep; but it’s unregulated and comes with side-effects.

Valerian – May promote deeper sleep, improve speed of falling asleep and sleep quality. Needs to be taken long term for best results – but may carry it’s own health risks and side-effects.

Wild Lettuce – Reduces anxiety and may quell restless leg syndrome.

Yoga or Meditation – Promote inner calm; we’ve written about yoga and insomnia before.

Never forget that any products marked as natural may still come with side-effects and their own risks. Not all ‘natural’ products are regulated.

You should always speak to your doctor before significantly changing your diet or taking new supplements or medications.
