Now insomnia sufferers wish they were reindeer

16 March 2010 in insomnia information

Time for a more light-hearted blog post; we just read this article from the BBC reporting about a study that found reindeer have no internal body clock.

Apparently, the lack of a body clock allows them to better cope with the extreme periods of prolonged daylight/darkness in the Arctic. Scientists found that reindeer have no natural rhythm of melatonin release into the blood – instead, the hormone responds only to the cycle of light and dark.

Sounds great to us – when it’s dark, melatonin is released and you can sleep. When it’s light outside, no melatonin is released so you can be active.

Admit it – you’re jealous, aren’t you?
