Old people are the cause of insomnia!

26 November 2009 in insomnia causes

An article from Herald Scotland tells us that it’s the elderly that are causing insomnia (at least if you’re a British politician). A more boring explanation of the article is that it is referring to the challenges an ageing population creates for governments in more economically developed countries.

Just so you don’t accuse us of shameless headline grabbing, let’s dig into this. Worry and stress can cause insomnia – few would dispute that. But are they the primary cause of sleepless nights?

I think worry and stress might be the most well-known causes of insomnia, but most insomniacs I know aren’t losing sleep over those reasons.

Like myself, their bodies just can’t maintain a wake/sleep cycle.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there, Ursula – insomnia isn’t always about stress and worry; there are some people out there who are the most relaxed people you’d ever meet – yet they struggle to sleep.

Again – it’s impossible to pigeon-hole insomnia; it affects different people for different reasons. That’s why we need more research and greater understanding of all sleep disorders.
