Possible link between the contraceptive pill and insomnia

28 July 2010 in insomnia causes

Many of us struggle to find the cause of our insomnia – and that’s why we become frustrated and angry when people who don’t suffer from insomnia tell us what we need to do to get a good night’s sleep. It just isn’t that simple.

If you’re still taking the detective path and trying to figure out the cause of your insomnia, we may have a new lead for you – the contraceptive pill. According to an article in the Telegraph, it’s possible that your contraceptive pill may be causing your insomnia.

Although the doctor giving the advice feels that it’s unlikely that contraceptive pills are a common cause of insomnia, he says that it may well be worth asking your doctor for a prescription for an alternative brand if think your pill may be the cause of your sleepless nights.

Whilst discussing your concerns with your doctor, the article also suggests it may be worth getting tested for anemia (which can be associated with restless leg syndrome) and an over or underactive thyroid.
