Seroquel should not be used as an insomnia cure

by Martin Reed on 9 December 2011 in insomnia cures

The FDA has not approved atypical antipsychotic drugs (including Seroquel) to treat insomnia, yet the US military is still prescribing the drug to overseas troops as an insomnia treatment.

Low doses (25mg) of Seroquel (generically known as quetiapine) have been approved by the Department of Defense to treat insomnia against the advice of the Defense Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, who have urged the use of less dangerous drugs to treat the condition.

Amazingly, the US Department of Defense has spent $846 million on Seroquel in the past decade, despite the fact the drug has not been found to be either safe OR effective when it comes to treating insomnia.

It sounds to us as though Seroquel should not be used to treat insomnia in anyone – regardless of whether they’re in the military or not.
