Sleep deprivation in teenagers can lead to depression and thoughts of suicide

8 January 2010 in insomnia information

We mentioned this a few days ago on our twitter page, but thought it was worth repeating and recording here. A new report has found that teenagers who go to bed after midnight are 24% more likely to to have depression than those who go to bed before 10pm. Furthermore, those who slept less than five hours per night had a 71% higher risk of depression than those who slept eight hours.

Pretty shocking statistics, we’re sure you’ll agree. Especially when you add in another finding from the report – that those given a bedtime by their parents of after midnight were 20% more likely to think about suicide than those who had a bedtime before 10pm.

This only adds further weight to our campaign to raise awareness of the importance of sleep and the urgency with which sleep deprivation and education needs to be addressed. We hope you’ll join us in this campaign – we can’t continue to keep our heads in the sand.
