Sleep habits by ethnicity

1 April 2010 in insomnia information

This isn’t strictly related to insomnia, but we thought it was interesting enough to share, nonetheless.

WebMD shared the findings of the 2010 Sleep Survey from the National Sleep Foundation. It found:

  • White people take sleep aids more often than other groups.
  • On weekdays or workdays, black people reported they slept the least.
  • Recession-related stress is more likely to affect the sleep of Hispanics and blacks.
  • Hispanics are more likely than other groups to say health-related concerns disturb their sleep at least a few nights a week.
  • Asians are the least likely to report sleep problems to their doctors.

We aren’t going to start analysing these findings – that’s not our area of expertise. However, we would be interested in hearing your thoughts on them.

On a side note, the survey also found that people’s awareness of the importance of sleep has improved – which can only be a good thing. Let’s hope that continues.
