The relationship between sleep disorders and combat

by Martin Reed on 4 July 2011 in insomnia causes

Insomnia and other sleep disorders have long been associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and therefore they’re particularly rife amongst combat veterans.

A new study now argues that sleep disruptions are a function of combat experience rather than a symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury.

This could be an extremely important finding – especially when you consider the fact that in 2008, the US Army reported that 8% of its soldiers in Afghanistan were taking medication to treat sleep related problems and that many soldiers report sleep problems for several months after returning home.

As the study’s authors conclude, perhaps it’s time to introduce routine screening for sleep problems for all combat veterans.
