I often add a caveat to my blog posts along the line of ‘always speak with your doctor first’ – and that isn’t going to change. However, one UK-based study has suggested that seeking insomnia help from your doctor probably won’t increase your chances of beating insomnia.
474 individuals over the age of 18 were surveyed after a year of reporting insomnia symptoms to determine whether those who sought medical advice showed signs of improvement compared to those who did not.
76% of insomniacs who sought medical advice for anxiety, depression, stress, neurosis or insomnia – or received a relevant prescription - still had insomnia symptoms after a year, compared to 66% of those who did not seek any primary care whatsoever.
It’s worth bearing in mind that this was only a small survey and it relied on a postal survey for its results. We also don’t know what treatment options were offered to the individuals surveyed.
All that being said, it shows that insomnia isn’t easily cured and that we probably need to overhaul how we treat and understand insomnia.
