Cure insomnia by altering your mind

We recently read this article about holistic stress reducing remedies that mentioned a herb that may be beneficial for insomnia sufferers:

Kava Kava - Used for fatigue, anxiety, stress and insomnia, this herb is calming, leads to an overall sense of well-being, clear thinking and relaxation of muscles. Resulting sleep is restful, often dream-filled, and there are no groggy after-effects the following day. 100mg three times per day has been found to relieve anxiety in a German study. Over-consumption leads to intoxication, so be careful with this stuff.

After doing a bit of research we decided that alcohol may be a better alternative. It can be more social and it's probably cheaper, too - unless you have expensive taste.

On a more serious note, once again we see the assumption that insomnia is a symptom of fatigue, anxiety and stress. Although that may well be the case for some (if not most) people, we don't like blanket assumptions.

    I DO have expensive tastes in single-malt scotch, I just don’t get to indulge it at all often–every 10-15 years, maybe. When I’m drinking an 8 oz tumbler of alcoholic beverage to stop my asthmatic coughing so I can get to sleep, it’s palatable but rather cheap. I am not going to chug fine singlemalts from my cabinet for that!

    You see, vicodin and codeine are the only prescription strengtheners to cough syrup, and they’d have me up all night with a different set of problems, so booze it is.

    I used to use Kava Kava, and it worked well for relaxation. Then it was pulled from the shelves in the U.S. because people were abusing it to get a high, which was causing liver damage, as well as other health problems. After satisfying the FDA by meeting new requirements, Kava Kava was sold over-the-counter again. It should only be used temporarily, for brief periods.

    One major side effect that seems to affect EVERYONE is that it increases dreams. Even if you never remember your dreams, or you think you don’t dream at all, you are in for a surprise if you take Kava Kava on a regular basis. This is why some people get psychologically addicted to it.
