Insomnia has a number of health implications. A recent study suggests this may be because sleep deprivation harms our immune system.
Researchers discovered that controlling the Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) in mice affected their response to vaccinations.
The TLR9 gene is hugely important to the human immune system since it kicks in whenever it detects the DNA of viruses and harmful bacteria.
Mice with the highest levels of TLR9 had the strongest response to vaccinations and were better able to fight infection. TLR9 was at its highest level in mice that got enough sleep.
We're tired of saying it, but once again we're sharing a study that demonstrates just how important sleep is whilst insomnia sufferers continue to suffer in silence or come up against untrained doctors or inaccessible treatment. This has to change.
