Yet another health risk associated with insomnia

Here's another condition to add to the growing list of illnesses associated with poor quality sleep - colon cancer.

According to new research, those who get less than six hours of sleep each night have close to a 50% increase in their risk of developing colorectal adenomas (precursors to cancer tumors) compared to those who sleep for at least seven hours.

Dr Li, one of the authors of the study, claims that the increase in risk due to a lack of sleep is the equivalent of having a parent or sibling with cancer.

All rather worrying - and yet another reason why insomnia deserves more respect, more research and more understanding.

    Then we need to make sure we get plenty of COLORFUL fruits and vegetables, and make sure we get enough whole grains, and ease off the processed foods, to improve our chances.

    I have a certain amount of fun going to farmers’ markets, where you get to taste a lot before you buy (or just because there are samples given out), talk to the farmers themselves, know what was used to fertilize etc the food you’re planning to buy, get access to more organic produce, try new foods (food stands abound!), get some fresh air, and know that ALL of the money you pay goes directly to the farmers themselves, with no middle stages to dilute their earnings. The produce has often been picked that morning or the afternoon before.

    There is one strawberry vendor from Moss Landing (Monterey County) who does not go for huge and tastefree, but offers organic and conventional berries, as they move to fully organic, which is healthier for anyone working in the fields, btw. I think the variety they grow is Seascape, and haven’t asked about their raspberries (red & golden).

    Because of them, I can’t eat strawberries out of season, nor can I eat allegedly ripe ones in season. If the berry isn’t read all the way to the top, I pass it buy, because it’ll still be white inside. Bleah.

    Because of heirloom tomatoes, I can’t eat the ordinary travel-safe but relatively tasteless market tomatoes, in or out of season. Romas are the only ones I’ll eat out of tomato season, otherwise a nice ripe Brandywine, striped little greens, huge yellows, Cherkokee Purples, and the like are the only ones for me, unless they come out of a friend’s garden.

    I still don’t like kale or chard, save in small quantities lightly cooked, beets, okra, parsnips, rutabagas, jerusalem artichokes/sunchokes, turnips, or bitter Asian greens.

    For frozen produce and prepared meals, I hit Trader Joe’s and WholeFoods-like markets: the quality is better, and with TJ’s, cheaper because they pay in cash, upfront, and always have, meaning no finance charges for the vendors, so they can cut their costs.

    It is the availability of a large variety of fresh produce all year that keeps me from moving closer to my beloved prey, the Maine Lobster or the blue & softshell crabs. We have to make do with Dungeness Crab and freight charges.
