New study may help diabetics with restless leg syndrome

We already know there's a link between restless leg syndrome and insomnia. We also know that diabetics tend to get less sleep than those without the condition.

So, what if you're living with the double-whammy - diabetes and restless leg syndrome? Well, we just came across some research that you might find interesting.

According to a study out of St Elizabeth's Medical Center, Boston, performing daily dialysis at home can help alleviate sleep problems caused by restless leg syndrome. The study found that over the course of 12 months, patients who switched to home short daily hemodialysis (SDHD) reported improved sleep and a decline in RLS (among those considered to have moderate to severe symptoms).

It's worth noting that there was no control group in this study, and that its participants were relatively young (the average age was 52). That being said, home dialysis could be an option worth discussing with your doctor if you're a diabetic suffering from restless leg syndrome.

Actually, you have to be an insomniac *insulin-dependent diabetic with kidney failure* AND RLS for any hemodialysis to be in the picture at all.

I’m hoping to avoid that, myself.
