Why tablet computers harm your sleep, may cause cancer

Electronic devices that emit light (such as the iPad) can harm your sleep.

I've written about this a number of times, and it's one of the reasons why I always recommend that insomnia sufferers remove all electronic items and gadgets from the bedroom.

Now, another study has reached a similar conclusion.

This latest research found that devices with lit screens emit optical radiation that suppresses the body's natural production of melatonin - an important sleep hormone.

The study, although small, found that although 1 hour of viewing a tablet set to the highest brightness had little effect, when viewing time reached and surpassed 2 hours, melatonin production was suppressed.

So, if you absolutely have to use your tablet, computer or other gadget, limit your usage time to 1 hour and keep the brightness low.

Although this advice is likely to be ignored, this is important stuff - especially when you consider that nighttime melatonin suppression from light has been linked to a number of diseases, including cancer.
